It seems liberals these days are domainated by ex 60's refugees. That is all well and good, but this is not the 60's. Knee jerk anti-war, anti-free market, anti-authority reaction does not do us well in these times. Let's get back to the branch of liberalism which engages with the world on moral grounds. The kind of thinking that Bill Clinton (yes, I used that name) used to end genocide in the Balkans. Moral authority.
Sadam was a butcher and murderer. The world is much better without him. Sudan is a great moral failure, where we stood by and watched so many die. Rwanda was another moral failure (also Bill Clinton's failure). We don't need to be the world's police, but we need to speak out loudly where it is needed and inspire as much help as possible from our friends in the world. And morality is the central compass. Knee-jerk anti-war thinking would have led to Sadam and Milosevic remaining in power. Is that better than what we have now?
